Creativity meets English class
What do you picture if you are thinking of a typical English class? Reading books, listening to voice records, maybe watching a movie or a teacher talking about grammar and vocabulary? Well, not in the 7B – because this class created posters with a professional illustrator. It was the idea of Mag. Margit Polly, well-known for her sometimes unconventional teaching strategies. She is not only working as a teacher but also has a business background. Thus she knows how important it is to combine theoretical knowledge with practical work, as it´s best performed by professionals.
Therefore, she invited Natasha Macheiner, a former student of the BRG. She has been working as a TV journalist and TV presenter for more than 20 years but also is following her true passion since 2008: working as an artist. Beyond that, she discovered in 2014 her love for Illustration – currently she is doing a BA (Hons) course in Illustration and Graphic Design at the Interactive Design Institute of the University of Hertfordshire, North England.
Natasha Macheiner combines her knowledge of both fields, “It is all about visual communication and the aim either to inform, educate or persuade a person or an audience.” One tool for achieving this goal are posters.
To create a poster that draws the attention though and will not be overlooked in the ephemera of today’s visual communication, one should know the basic rules of poster design, which are among others: composition, colour, balance, hierarchy, the usage of white and negative space, the visual focus and the imagery. And these have been exactly the elements which Natasha Macheiner taught the students of the 7B.
As mentioned before, the poster design lessons were conducted in English. In addition to that Mag. Polly followed a very modern approach – interdisciplinary teaching with reference to the world of work.
The feedback of the students: “It was a really cool idea! It is fun to do something creative in an English class.”.
Another one said: “Great. Now I can help my mum with her presentation.”. In other words, these skills can be used in many fields.
Due to the big success, this class could be offered to all students in the 7th Grade.
BRG Wiener Neustadt setzt auf Vortragende aus der Wirtschaft
Fächerübergreifender Unterricht und Vortragende aus der Wirtschaft – längst hat beides in vielen Österreichischen Schulen Einzug gehalten.
Und doch geht man im BRG Gröhrmühlgasse noch weiter. Dort hat man sich unlängst eine Illustratorin in die Englischklasse geholt.
Sie war viele Jahre das Gesicht von WNTV. Doch wer sie kennt, weiß, dass ihr Herz schon seit langem vor allem für die Kunst schlägt. Die Rede ist von Natasha Macheiner. So hat sie bereit den einen oder anderen Auftrag als Malerin abgewickelt – ihre Bilder sind etwa bei MedAustron zu sehen. 2014 hat sie darüber hinaus eine Ausbildung als Illustratorin begonnen. Derzeit studiert sie dieses Fach am Interactive Design Institute an der englischen Universität Hertfordshire. Natürlich auf Englisch.
Für Englischlehrerin Mag. Margit Polly vom BRG Wiener Neustadt Anlass genug, die ehemalige Schülerin einzuladen, um der 7B die Grundlagen des Poster Designs näherzubringen.
Englischunterricht eben einmal anders.
Die Reaktion der Schüler/innen: „Echt cool! Es macht Spass, etwas Kreatives im Englischunterricht zu machen.“ oder „Jetzt kann ich auch meiner Mutter bei ihren Präsentationen helfen.“.
Aufgrund des großen Erfolges könnte dieses Englischmodul für alle siebenten Klassen angeboten werden.
